About Amanda

Turn Toward the Light painting
Amanda D'Agostino headshot

I am a self-taught, award-winning, representational oil painter, and I began seriously working with oil paint in December 2019.

I often select limited palettes with unusual color combinations to evoke the emotional impact I want the viewer to feel. Each rural landscape, nocturne, and garden painting reflects my deep love for the natural world. Using a variety of strokes, blending, glazing, and palette knife work, I compose scenes that capture the essence of real places, reimagined through my own lens.

Since I started competing in 2021, my work has been juried into several regional and national shows. My 10" x 10" oil painting, Dogwood Reverie, won Best Beginner in the Plein Air Salon competition in 2022 and was also selected for Art of the State at the State Museum of Pennsylvania (September 2023 – January 2024), a highly competitive exhibition with a 4% acceptance rate.

My background in landscape photography, spanning two decades, informs my understanding of composition and design. However, painting gives me the freedom to decide which elements to include or simplify, allowing me to create expressive, colorful works that are both representational and slightly impressionistic.

My artwork pulls beauty from the mundane, elevating everyday scenes into imaginative and beautiful reveries. Always representational and expressive with hints of impressionism, I explore design, composition, and color to capture the feeling I had when experiencing a scene or subject.
